Gregg Clifton serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Aurigen Group.
Prior to founding Aurigen, Mr. Clifton practiced as an independent consultant, providing services to direct life insurance companies and companies in the real estate and technology sectors. Manulife was a major client and he provided ongoing advice to Munich Re, his previous employer. For his insurance and reinsurance clients, Mr. Clifton led the due diligence and negotiation teams for several acquisitions, advised on the structuring of capital and tax efficient reinsurance transactions, designed compliance systems and consulted on a range of regulatory issues. For both insurance and non-insurance clients, Mr. Clifton has provided business planning, general management and capital planning advice. In addition to his consulting practice, Mr. Clifton is the representative for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario on the Professional Liability Insurance Committee of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. In 2005, Mr. Clifton became a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and qualified as an Institute-certified Director (ICD.D) having completed the ICD Corporate Governance College, Directors Education program at the Joseph L. Rotman Business School at the University of Toronto. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Distress Centre Peel, a provider of crisis telephone support for the community.
Prior to starting his consulting practice, Mr. Clifton was the Senior Vice President and Treasurer for the Canadian life reinsurance unit of Munich Reinsurance Company in Toronto. His responsibilities included financial reporting, capital planning, investments and investment policy, treasury management, operations accounting, taxation and regulatory compliance. During his tenure with Munich Reinsurance Company, the Canadian life reinsurance unit progressed through a period of significant growth and development with a ten fold increase in premiums and assets and the addition of major portfolio transactions to its base of recurring life reinsurance business.
Having graduated from York University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Mr. Clifton began his career in the audit practice of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) in Toronto, where he specialized in audit and related services for financial institutions including banks, insurers and reinsurers. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1973. In 1978, Mr. Clifton joined the insolvency and restructuring practice of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. managing engagements in many industries for secured lenders, government agencies and owner-managers. While connected with the insolvency and restructuring practice, Mr. Clifton received his qualification as a Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (and as a Trustee in Bankruptcy) in 1980 and was admitted to partnership in 1982.
